What Kyiv Zoo is famous for: the formation and history of Kyiv Zoo

The Kyiv Zoological Park is one of the most important nature conservation institutions in the country, combining scientific, educational and recreational functions. It is home to a large number of animals from different continents: from large predators and ungulates to exotic birds, primates and representatives of aquatic ecosystems. The collection is formed taking into account the conservation status of species, as well as the conditions necessary for their comfortable life, which allows maintaining stable populations and participating in international nature conservation programmes.

Education plays a special role in the zoo’s activities. Educational classes, themed lessons, excursions and workshops are held for schoolchildren, where children can learn more about the animal world. There is a club for young naturalists, which helps them learn the basics of biology, ecology and animal care. Special programmes have been created for visitors with special needs, including ‘Zoo by Touch,’ which allows people with visual impairments to learn about animals through tactile contact and explanatory lessons.

An important stage in its development has been the reconstruction that has been ongoing since 2017.

The infrastructure is being updated, modern enclosures and comfortable recreation areas are being built. At the same time, an arboretum is being developed, creating a green environment that is favourable for both animals and visitors to the zoo.

The history of KyivZoo began in 1907, and since then the zoo has experienced periods of growth, war losses and restoration. Today, it remains not only a popular place for family leisure, but also an important centre for nature conservation, combining science, environmental education and biodiversity conservation.
