Biography

Oleksandr Terekh was born on 8 December 1928 in Kyiv. His father, Ivan Zakharovych (1898-1977), was an agronomist. Hanna Stepanivna, the future writer’s mother, was an English teacher. His parents came from the village of Olshana.

Oleksandr Terekh studied at secondary school No. 92 in Kyiv. Later, he entered Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where he studied at the Faculty of Philology, Department of Romance and Germanic Languages. He graduated in 1952.

In the same year, he got married. His chosen one was Lidia Tikhonivna Nechyporenko (1927-2000). They had a son (1953) and a daughter Oksana (1962).

Teaching career

Oleksandr Terekh worked as an English teacher and editor at the Moloda Publishing House and the Veselka Publishing House. Later he was an editor and head of the Western literature department at Vsesvit magazine. He taught translation theory at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

He has translated from English works by Trees, Bradbury, Galsworthy, Henry, Lillian Moore, Belentine, Amis, Salinger, Joyce, and others.
The translator managed to work on many works by other authors. He was awarded the Maxim Rylsky Prize (2005).
