Ukraine is looking for a solution to repair the damage caused by a Russian drone strike on confidential property at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (ChNPP). This was announced by the Minister of Ecology Svitlana Grinchuk, the Guardian reports.
The government is working with experts to determine the best way to restore the proper functioning of the containment after the drone strike on 14 February.
‘We are actively working on this… We, of course, need to restore the arch so that there are no leaks in any case, because ensuring nuclear and radiation safety is the main task,’ she said about the situation at Chornobyl.
The arch was installed in 2019 to cover the leaking ‘sarcophagus’ underneath, which was hastily put in place a few weeks after the 1986 Chornobyl disaster. A drone attack in February pierced a large hole in the outer cover of the new protective structure and exploded inside.
Earlier, 11 cogeneration units were put into operation in the Kyiv region.
