The House with Chimeras is one of the most extraordinary and famous architectural structures in Kyiv. It is located in the central part of the city, where at the beginning of the 20th century there were still neglected plots of land. It was here that architect Vladislav Gorodetsky decided to build a home for himself, which became a true work of art and craftsmanship.
Built in the Art Nouveau style in the early 1900s, this house is distinguished not only by its unusual appearance but also by its innovative technical solutions for that time. It became one of the first residential buildings in Kyiv to be constructed using cement as the main building material. Due to the uneven terrain on which it stands, the building has three floors on one side and six on the other.
The most characteristic feature of this building is its rich sculptural decor. The facades are decorated with numerous figures of animals and fantastic creatures: here you can see sea creatures, whales, giant frogs, rhinos and antelopes, birds and reptiles, dolphins, as well as various plant motifs. Some details have both decorative and practical functions: for example, the trunks of elephants were used as gutters.
The house was originally planned as a profitable building, in which six of the seven apartments were rented out to wealthy residents. Gorodetsky himself occupied one of the largest and best-decorated apartments. The layout of the rooms was carefully thought out: for example, the servants’ quarters were located so that the first rays of sunlight would shine into their windows, and the master’s study would receive light during the daytime.
The House with Chimeras in Kyiv and its interior
The interiors of the house were no less impressive than the exterior decor. They were decorated with unique stucco mouldings with motifs of the underwater world, colourful wall paintings, decorative plaster elements and wooden details.
Some of the original decoration has survived to this day or has been restored during renovations.
In subsequent years, the building’s fate was not easy: it changed owners, was used as a residential building, and then even as a hospital, which affected the condition of its walls and decor. However, at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, the building underwent a major renovation. Thanks to this, the house was given a new lease of life as a small ceremonial residence, where guests are now received, official meetings are held, and important events are held.
Today, the House with Chimeras is perceived not only as an architectural monument but also as a symbol of creative freedom, craftsmanship and imagination, making it one of the most striking landmarks of the capital. It attracts the attention of both locals and visitors who want to see this unique combination of art and architecture.
Earlier, Ukrainians learned about the Mariinsky Palace in Kyiv, which is one of Ukraine’s most prominent architectural monuments and a symbol of state power. This exquisite Baroque building is located in the historic part of the capital and has played an important role in the political and cultural life of the country for many centuries.
