The history of the circus in Kyiv

There has always been room for wonder in Kyiv. Circus art appeared here long ago, back in 1797, when artistic groups began to travel around the city. They built temporary open-air arenas and staged performances that instantly became a popular leisure activity for Kyiv residents. People craved excitement, laughter, and wonder — and the circus gave them all of that, creating a special festive atmosphere.

In the 19th century, the city grew rapidly, and the circus grew with it. There was no permanent venue at that time, so performances were held wherever walls and space allowed: at fairs, in courtyards, and sometimes in theatres. In particular, the Bergogne Drama Theatre was often transformed into an arena for acrobats and horsemen. The circus in Kyiv has always been loved — and this love gradually demanded more.

At the end of the 19th century, the city experienced a real breakthrough with the appearance of Krutikov’s HippoPalace circus. Its huge dome impressed even those who were not interested in art. Horses were the main characters of the programme: well-trained and proud, they created breathtaking spectacles. Stars from different countries performed here, and each performance became an event.

The atmosphere of a bright holiday

During this period, Kyiv welcomed such legends as Ivan Piddubny. A strongman with incredible endurance, he conquered not only the circus arena but also the hearts of the audience. He was called a symbol of courage – and for good reason. Another hero of that time, Ivan Zaikin, impressed with his daring physical strength, lifting weights that were hard to believe. The performances of these artists became part of the historical memory of the capital.

This famous circus family combined business and creativity, supported talented artists and boldly introduced new formats for performances. However, the 20th century brought trials to Kyiv: revolutions, wars, economic losses. But even in dark times, people did not forget about what gives hope. The circus continued to live, albeit sometimes in temporary buildings, venues or mobile premises. After World War II, the idea arose to create a new arena worthy of the capital.

Permanent circus building

Thus, in 1960, the magnificent Circus on Peremoha Square appeared — a modern engineering structure with a dome that became part of the Kyiv skyline. Here, anything was possible: climbing up to the dome itself, flooding the arena with water, using complex stage mechanisms. This place opened the door to dreams for new generations of artists who were not afraid to walk a tightrope over the abyss.

Today, the circus continues to be an integral part of Kyiv’s cultural soul. Children watch the gymnasts fly through the air with bated breath, adults return to their childhood for a moment, and the hall erupts in applause again and again. Visiting the circus remains a tradition of family celebrations that unites generations.

The circus history of the city is not only about buildings and artistic troupes. It is the story of people who managed to turn an ordinary evening into a real miracle. From 1797 to the present day, Kyiv has cherished that special magic that only exists in the circus: the magic of courage, joy and belief that the impossible can exist nearby.
