Increased trading activity and limited supply in Ukrainian markets have led to higher selling prices for high-quality carrots, according to EastFruit.
At the beginning of this week, the average price of carrots in Ukraine increased by 12%.
‘Producers are currently willing to sell the vegetable at 7-13 UAH/kg (0.17-0.31 USD/kg) depending on the quality and volume of the batches,’ the report said.
Market representatives explain the price increase by more active demand. Meanwhile, most farms have limited sales of high-quality carrots, expecting further price increases, and have put most of the harvest into storage. Only surpluses are entering the market, which has reduced supply.
Despite this, current carrot prices in Ukraine remain approximately 54% lower than in the same period last year.
Experts note that the current price increase may be temporary: rising prices may encourage farmers to start selling off their stocks from storage, which will increase supply and reduce the cost of the product.
It is also reported that the formation of prices on the domestic market for greenhouse vegetables in the winter period will depend not so much on domestic demand as on competitive pressure from imports, which will effectively determine the upper price limit.
As a reminder, almost all products have risen in price in Ukraine, with some increasing by as much as 200%.
