Saint Sophia Cathedral – 1014 years of sacred history of our spiritual capital

In July 2024, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine decided to establish 4 November as the day of commemoration of the consecration of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, a magnificent shrine built in the early 11th century in the heart of the princely city.

Although this is not a new holiday for our Church, it has special significance. This date was previously present in ancient Ukrainian calendars, but disappeared after the Kyiv Metropolis was annexed to the Moscow Patriarchate in the 17th century. The restoration of this memory was not only an act of historical justice, but also a return to our spiritual roots – to Sophia, which for over a thousand years has been a symbol of our faith, culture and statehood.

St. Sophia Cathedral is not just an architectural monument. It is living history that has silently observed the development of Ukrainian statehood, spirituality and culture. Prayers of many generations have resounded under its vaults, and its walls have witnessed countless events that have shaped the face of Rus-Ukraine. The cathedral’s magnificent frescoes and mosaics are true gems of ancient art, which still captivate with their unique beauty, depth of meaning and extraordinary spiritual power.

Saint Sophia Cathedral and the history of the grandeur of the temple of Rus

The foundation of the cathedral is associated with Grand Prince Vladimir, the baptiser of Rus, who began the construction of this temple, and its completion was carried out by his son, Saint Yaroslav the Wise. In his famous work ‘The Word of Law and Grace,’ Metropolitan Hilarion of Kyiv mentions that Yaroslav completed his father’s plan, just as Solomon completed David’s work by building the temple in Jerusalem.

Foreign sources also mention St. Sophia Cathedral: German bishop Thitmar of Merseburg wrote about the construction of the shrine in his chronicle as early as 1017, and in 1018, he wrote about the functioning residence of the Metropolitan of Kyiv. This information is confirmed by ancient graffiti inscriptions on the walls of the temple, dated 1018-1023, which allow us to accurately determine the time of the cathedral’s construction.

According to ancient saints, on 4 November 1011, the site and foundations of the future temple were consecrated under Prince Vladimir the Great, and on 11 May 1018, its throne was consecrated under Prince Yaroslav the Wise. These two dates mark the beginning and completion of the construction of one of the oldest and greatest temples in Europe.

As is well known, on 4 November 2025, Ukrainians will celebrate the 1014th anniversary of the consecration of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, a shrine that appeared 136 years before the founding of Moscow. This is not only a historical fact, but also a reminder of the thousand-year spiritual continuity of our people.

We would like to remind you that the Lavra explained why the cross was removed from the Church of All Saints.
