“Russia has a certain amount of forces”: border guards explain whether there will be a new attack on Kyiv

An offensive on Kyiv by Russian troops is not possible in the near future.

Russia currently does not have enough forces to organise an offensive on the northern border. Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS), provided details at a briefing.

Russian troops are not able to re-invade, so an attack on Kyiv is not realistic at the moment. Russia has withdrawn all its units from the territory of Belarus, which were on training grounds, and has not set up new ones.

The SBGS spokesman also noted that it is necessary to be prepared for any unforeseen situations. Demchenko added that the situation on the border with Russia is similar.

“Russia has a certain number of forces on the other side, approximately 19-20 thousand soldiers,” he explained.

Demchenko stressed that if we take the entire length of the border with Russia, the forces that the enemy has in this area are not enough for a new large-scale attack. According to him, if Russia takes any steps, they will be more tactical, so a repeat attack on Kyiv is not expected.

All actions taken on the border with Ukraine are aimed primarily at ensuring that Ukraine keeps the necessary number of its units near the border. This forces our troops not to move them to more important areas where fighting is currently taking place.

Situation north of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

According to the report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the operational situation in the Polissya and Volyn sectors has not changed significantly.

On the Siverskyi and Slobozhanskyi directions, Russian troops maintain a military presence in the border areas. The enemy continues to conduct sabotage activities to prevent the redeployment of our troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border with the Belgorod region.

The Russian invaders used artillery to fire at settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv regions. In total, more than 100 towns and villages came under artillery fire not only in the northern regions, but also in Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions. Ukrainian defenders continue to successfully destroy the occupiers.

As a reminder, on 18 February, Russian troops attacked Kyiv region and various regions of Ukraine. The attack destroyed more than 700 trees and created sinkholes.
