Rains and low temperatures: weather forecast for May

Прогноз погоди на травень в Україні

The weather forecast for May will not differ too much from the traditional announcements. Next month, Ukrainians are expected to experience fairly comfortable weather conditions with moderate rainfall and low temperatures. This was reported to Meteoprog by meteorologist Igor Kibalchych, PhD in Geography.

He said that April was marked by a period of significant cold weather with frosts, and overall, the temperature of the month was within the long-term average. In the eastern regions of Ukraine, the temperature even exceeded the norm by 1 to 2 °C. Precipitation was relatively evenly distributed. At the same time, the eastern and southern regions of the country still experienced a lack of precipitation due to the prevalence of dry and anticyclonic weather.

Weather in May in Ukraine

The forecast for May in Ukraine is for anticyclonic weather, so no significant precipitation is expected, and the air temperature will be close to normal. After 4-5 May, the weather will become more unstable due to the intensification of cyclonic activity and the passage of atmospheric fronts from the west. May and the weather in Ukraine will bring rains of varying intensity, with thunderstorms, hail and gusts of wind in some places. Temperatures will be close to the long-term average, however, in the west and north of Ukraine it will be much cooler on some days, while in the south there may be short periods of heat. The second half of the month is expected to be more stable. Dry weather may intensify due to an increase in the number of low cloud days and rising atmospheric pressure.

Some parts of Ukraine may experience short-term frosts in the first half of May, mainly in the north and west. Their impact will be limited across the territory and will not cause significant damage compared to the April cold.

Weather in May in Europe

The weather in May will to some extent resemble the summer forecast, as thunderstorms are expected. Daytime temperatures may exceed +30…+32 °C, although long periods of heat are not expected. Certain atmospheric processes will be in place over Europe at the beginning of next month, which will contribute to the western and southwestern transfer of air masses. This situation will lead to an increase in precipitation in a number of countries (especially in Italy and neighbouring countries, as well as on the Balkan Peninsula). The temperature background in May will generally be in line with the climatic norm, with only minor fluctuations on certain days.

Temperature in May in Ukraine

The average air temperature in May in Ukraine is forecast to be within +13…+17 °С, which is close to the norm, in the southeastern part of the country it will be 1-1.5 °С higher than the norm in some places. On some days, the daytime temperature will reach +30…+33 °C, and at night it will drop to +1…+7 °C.

Precipitation in May may be above normal – by 25-75% on average. This situation will be caused by thunderstorms and active cyclonic activity.
In May, 45 – 90 mm of precipitation will fall in the plains, and up to 100 – 150 mm in the Carpathians and the Crimean mountains. This figure will compensate for the deficit in previous months and will help to create conditions for plant growth and development, as well as significantly reduce the risk of wildfires.

Earlier, it was announced when frosts are expected in late April.
