Patriarch Filaret has died in Ukraine

His Holiness Patriarch Filaret passed away at the age of 98. This was announced by Epiphanius, Head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).

The Metropolitan called for prayers for the repose of Patriarch Filaret’s soul.

“We will always remember Patriarch Filaret’s teachings on the importance of maintaining the unity of the Ukrainian Church around the See of Kyiv. We will also remember and follow his lessons and teachings on the importance of conciliarity, on humility before God’s will and the will of the whole Church, and on devoted service to God, the Church of Christ and the Ukrainian people,” he said.

The Primate passed away following a prolonged hospitalisation.

It should be recalled that in July 2024, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine decided to designate 4 November as the day to commemorate the consecration of St Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv – a magnificent shrine built as early as the beginning of the 11th century.
