Most regions will remain cold: forecasters have announced the weather forecast for February

February is the final month of the calendar winter and retains its main features. This period is characterised by unstable weather, a combination of severe frosts with short-term warming, as well as noticeable differences in climatic conditions depending on the region of Ukraine. This was reported by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre.

In most regions, February remains cold. Average monthly air temperatures mostly range from zero to -6 °C. It is usually coldest in the north, north-east and east of the country, where winters are more continental in nature. In contrast, in the southern regions, Transcarpathia and Crimea, average temperatures can be above zero, causing frequent thaws.

An important feature of February is significant temperature contrasts. This month can bring both very severe frosts and abnormally warm days. In some years, absolute minimum temperatures have dropped to -30 °C and below, especially in the eastern and north-eastern regions. At the same time, when warm air masses invade, the daytime temperature can rise to +15…+20 °C, and even higher in the south.

Weather in February – where there will be snow and frost

Precipitation in February is usually moderate. In most regions, it falls in the form of snow, wet snow or snow with rain. The total monthly precipitation is mostly low, but in the mountainous regions of the Carpathians and Transcarpathia, it can be significantly higher. Snow cover often persists in February, especially in the north and west of the country, while in the southern regions it is unstable and can melt quickly during thaws.

February is also characterised by frequent weather changes: alternating periods of frost and warmth, stronger winds, blizzards and black ice. Such conditions can make travel difficult and affect the operation of transport and public services.

At the same time, February gradually prepares for the transition to spring. With each passing day, the length of daylight hours increases, and solar activity slowly increases. Although winter is not yet in a hurry to retreat, at the end of the month, the first signs of spring warming appear more and more often.

Thus, February is a month of contrasts and changeable weather, combining harsh winter conditions with the first hints of the approaching spring.
