Maidan Nezalezhnosti: how Kyiv’s main square became not only an architectural centre, but also a public arena

Maidan Nezalezhnosti is one of the most important symbols of modern Kyiv, a space where historical memory, national identity and civic activism intertwine. Over the centuries, the square has changed its shape and purpose: from the outskirts of the city during the times of Kievan Rus, it gradually transformed into a central urban space that played different roles in different historical periods. With the development of the city, the square became increasingly important as a business, cultural and transport centre, and in the 20th century it became the leading centre of social and political life in the capital.

After Ukraine gained independence, Maidan took on a new meaning, becoming one of the key symbols of statehood. One of the central elements of the square is the Independence Monument, an architectural structure created at the beginning of the 21st century as a symbol of the rebirth of the state and its desire for independence. The monument is a tall column topped with a figure of a girl in national dress holding a branch of viburnum in her hands.

This image symbolises freedom, spiritual rebirth and the continuity of Ukrainian history. The architectural and artistic design of the monument was aimed at combining modernity with traditional symbolism, which made it possible to create a recognisable dominant feature of the urban space.

A spacious square with decorative elements, fountains and an amphitheatre has been formed around the monument, which has become a venue for celebrations, cultural events and holidays. Thanks to this, Independence Square has become not only an architectural centre, but also an important public arena. It has become a place where key events in Ukraine’s recent history have taken place, including mass gatherings, peaceful demonstrations, public initiatives and events that have influenced the political course of the state. The square has repeatedly become a symbol of the struggle for democratic values and the rule of law, and its image is deeply embedded in the public consciousness.

Independence Square and architecture

The architectural ensemble of the square has gradually changed, but the Independence Monument has remained its main focal point. It has become one of the most prominent symbols of Kyiv, reflecting the people’s desire for freedom and the establishment of national statehood. In combination with the surrounding urban environment, the monument forms a harmonious compositional centre that emphasises the importance of the square as the heart of the capital. At the same time, Maidan continues to be a vibrant public space where historical memory, cultural heritage and contemporary social processes coexist.

Today, Independence Square is not only an important cultural location, but also a place that symbolises the resilience of the Ukrainian people, their desire for freedom and their ability to fight for their own future. It remains one of the most recognisable places in Kyiv and plays a leading role in shaping the image of the city as the capital of independent Ukraine.

In the summer of 2025, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) arrived in Kyiv by train together with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk later joined them. They met on Independence Square.
