The Kyiv Planetarium is one of Ukraine’s most important scientific and educational centres, which has been introducing visitors to the laws of the universe and natural sciences for many decades. Its history began in 1952, when, on the initiative of the famous astronomer Serhii Vsekhsviatskyi, the country’s first specialised institution of this type was opened in the capital.
The planetarium’s first premises were located in the converted Oleksandrivsky Church, which made it possible to quickly start work and organize regular lectures and shows for schoolchildren, students, and anyone interested in astronomy.
In 1987, the planetarium moved to a new, spacious building specially designed for full-dome projections. The dome, with a diameter of over twenty-three metres, became the basis for the installation of a large spherical screen, which provides the effect of maximum immersion in visual journeys through space. This design made it possible to demonstrate complex models of planetary motion, phase changes of the Moon, eclipses, comet orbits, star clusters and other phenomena that are not always observable in real conditions today.
Kyiv Planetarium and the present day
Modern technical equipment allows for a variety of programmes to be held: from classic lectures on astronomy to full-dome films and themed science shows. A significant part of the events is aimed at children and teenagers, which helps to develop an interest in natural sciences and forms a general understanding of the structure of the universe. For adults, there are lecture series, interactive demonstrations, and special events dedicated to new discoveries in astrophysics, cosmology, and space technology.
In the second decade of the 21st century, a modern multimedia centre was created at the planetarium, equipped with a digital system with a multi-projector installation that provides high image clarity across the entire surface of the dome.
This has made it possible to significantly expand the repertoire of programmes and supplement the educational direction with artistic performances. Today, the planetarium serves not only a scientific but also a cultural function: it hosts concerts, audiovisual installations, theatrical shows and other events in a 360° format, combining music, light and the dynamics of the starry sky.
Thanks to its wide range of programmes and constant updating of its technical base, the Kyiv Planetarium remains popular among residents and visitors to the city despite everything.
