A significant cold snap is expected in the capital, which may affect power outage schedules: according to forecasts, the air temperature will drop below -10 degrees, which under certain conditions may lead to more frequent power outages.
As the head of the Ukrainian Energy Development League explains, when temperatures remain below -10°C for a long time, the load on the energy system traditionally increases, as domestic consumers use more electricity to heat their homes. This could lead to existing power outage schedules becoming more stringent and including additional rounds of outages.
The expert notes that low temperatures alone do not pose a critical threat to the energy infrastructure: overhead transmission lines and substations are designed to operate in cold winter conditions. However, active consumption during cold periods traditionally increases the load on the grid, which can complicate the balance between electricity generation and consumption.
The capital currently has power outage schedules in place to maintain the stability of the energy system in the event of infrastructure damage. The deterioration of weather conditions only adds to the burden on these schedules, as lower temperatures increase the demand for electricity in the morning and evening hours.
Experts emphasise that in such conditions, it is important to consume electricity wisely, for example, by avoiding turning on powerful appliances at the same time during peak hours or immediately after power is restored. This will help reduce the load on the grid and potentially reduce the duration and frequency of power cuts.
At the same time, the expert stresses that the key factor in the stability of the power system remains not only the weather, but also attacks on the aggressor’s energy infrastructure. It is these attacks that have a much greater impact on frequent and prolonged power outages in Ukraine.
