How to protect yourself from Coxsackie viruses: symptoms, routes of infection and prevention

Coxsackie viruses belong to the enterovirus group and can cause a variety of infectious diseases, ranging from mild forms to severe damage to the nervous system or heart muscle. The infection most often affects children, especially in large groups.

Recently, an outbreak of this disease was recorded in the Kyiv region: 13 children fell ill, most of whom have already recovered, and one child is still under medical supervision as of 4 November. Specialists are conducting an epidemiological investigation, determining the source of infection and monitoring the situation – no new cases have been detected so far.

Coxsackie viruses spread in several ways:

• faecal-oral – through unwashed hands, vegetables, fruit or water;
• airborne – through coughing or sneezing;
• contact – through shared toys, dishes, surfaces.

The pathogen is quite resistant to environmental influences, but dies quickly when boiled or exposed to disinfectants.

The incubation period usually lasts from three to six days. The disease begins acutely: the temperature rises to 38-40 °C, the throat hurts, and the tonsils become red. A characteristic rash appears in the form of blisters on the palms, soles, or mucous membranes of the mouth — this is the so-called ‘hand-foot-and-mouth’ syndrome. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, general weakness, and headache are possible. In most cases, the disease resolves on its own within 7-10 days, but sometimes complications arise – meningitis, encephalitis or myocarditis – which require urgent medical attention.

Since there is no vaccine against Coxsackie viruses yet, the main protection is prevention. It is necessary to maintain good hygiene: wash your hands with soap after using the toilet, before eating, and after walks; teach children not to touch their faces with dirty hands; drink only boiled or bottled water; wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly. It is important to regularly ventilate rooms and disinfect surfaces and children’s toys. To strengthen the immune system, you should sleep at least eight hours a day, spend time outdoors, and eat a balanced diet.

If symptoms of the disease appear, you should immediately consult a doctor and not self-medicate. The patient should be isolated, provided with sufficient fluids, and closely monitored. If convulsions, vomiting, or excessive drowsiness occur, call emergency services.

Remember: standard hygiene rules remain the most reliable protection against Coxsackie viruses and many other infections.
