Researchers who observe the life of grey cranes spend most of their time in wetlands, as these areas are the natural habitat of these noble and extremely cautious birds. Here, cranes build their nests, carefully hiding them in tall grass or reeds, and lovingly raise their chicks, trying to remain invisible to prying eyes.
Sometimes scientists manage to capture truly rare moments – encounters with cranes in the forests, when adult birds lead their young and teach them independence. Such episodes are a great success for researchers, as it is not often possible to see cranes up close.

Most observations are carried out using special camera traps, which allow us to glimpse the hidden life of birds without disturbing them.
Cranes in Ukraine
Today, it is difficult to determine the exact number of grey cranes nesting within the reserve. According to preliminary estimates by the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, there are about 15-18 pairs, but these figures remain approximate due to the extreme caution of the birds.
Grey cranes avoid any contact with humans, keep their distance and react to even the slightest movement or sound, so counting them requires a lot of time, patience and caution. Every encounter with these amazing creatures is a real discovery and a reminder of the fragility of wildlife.
The images captured by camera traps preserve invaluable evidence of the life of cranes — symbols of peace, fidelity, and natural harmony that remain an integral part of Ukrainian landscapes.
Let us remind you that servals evacuated from the frontline town of Kurakhove live in the orchard. Four individuals were evacuated from the frontline town in Donetsk Oblast to the Kyiv Zoo.
