‘EU support for Ukraine has been my personal priority”: Borrell shows photo from Kyiv train station

This is the fifth visit to the capital of Ukraine for the European official.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell arrived in Kyiv on 8 November. He gave details to the X service.

The politician noted that this was his fifth visit since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. Josep Borrell stressed that it was important for him to support the decision to provide assistance to our country.

‘EU support for Ukraine has been my personal priority during my mandate and will remain at the top of the EU agenda,’ he explained.

Biography of Josep Borrell

Josep Borrell was born in Spain. In 1991, he was elected to the Council of Ministers. He began his tenure as Minister of Public Works and Transport.

In July 2004, Borrell was elected President of the European Parliament. He was the first newly elected member of the European Parliament to serve in this position since direct elections were held in 1979.

The Spaniard also chaired the Parliament’s temporary committee on enlargement policy and budget in 2007-2013.
In 2019, European Council President Donald Tusk made a statement that the European Council plans to nominate Josep Borrell for the post of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The initiative was supposed to add additional responsibilities for humanitarian aid, support for development policy in Africa, and the external dimension of immigration to the portfolio.

In July 2019, Borrell announced that he had acquired dual Argentine-Spanish citizenship, which he obtained on 18 July 2019. He received the citizenship with which his father was born.

Borrell issued a statement condemning the attack by Russian troops and calling on Russia to return to the relevant principles of the Normandy format. In April 2022, EU High Representative Josep Borrell met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv. The European official supported the decision to possibly confiscate the Russian central bank’s frozen foreign exchange reserves of more than $300 billion to cover the costs of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
On the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, the President of Ukraine awarded Borrell the Order of Merit, first class, for significant personal services in strengthening interstate cooperation, supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and state sovereignty, and making a significant contribution to the promotion of the Ukrainian state in the world.

Earlier, the Pentagon chief made an unannounced visit to Kyiv.
