The band DakhaBrakha
The Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha was formed in the early 2000s. Folklorists and musicians united around Vladyslav Troitskyi. The group included Nina Garanetska, Iryna Kovalenko, and Olena Tsybulska.
The name of the band, according to the members, was created from the old Ukrainian words ‘to give’ and ‘to take’. Most likely, the forms ‘dakha’ and ‘braha’ correspond to a somewhat outdated form of the past tense (aorist), cf. Bulgarian ‘dadokha, (raz)braha’.
The musicians have created many songs. For example, the soundtrack to Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s silent film Earth was released in 2012. In 2023, the animated feature film Mavka. The Forest Song. DakhaBrakha composed the soundtrack for it.
As a reminder, actor Dmytro Oliynyk has been nominated for the Golden Dzyga film award.
