Capacity of up to 3,000 tonnes: Ukrzaliznytsia receives its first battery-powered shunting locomotives

Ukrainian Railways now has modern battery-powered shunting locomotives at its disposal. They are capable of reaching speeds of up to 10 km/h and moving freight cars with a total weight of up to 3,000 tonnes. This was reported by the press service of the agency.

The equipment is equipped with fast charging and autonomous operation for up to 24 hours. In fact, it should become an alternative to old diesel shunting locomotives at the company’s production facilities.

The first machines will be put into operation in key production units in the near future. Thanks to their high energy efficiency and ease of maintenance, this will increase the efficiency of shunting operations.

Battery-powered tractors operate without CO₂ emissions or harmful substances. Their operation is cheaper compared to diesel counterparts, which will allow the saved resources to be directed towards the development of the company’s production capacities.

The company called the purchase of battery-powered tractors an important step in the modernisation strategy of Ukrzaliznytsia. This will contribute to the development of infrastructure, increase the environmental friendliness of transport and further integrate the Ukrainian railway into European standards.

The entire batch is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2026.

As is known, on 20 February 2025, Ukrzaliznytsia signed a contract with the Bulgarian company Express Service OOD for the supply of ten battery-powered shunting locomotives.

We would like to remind you that modernised electric trains will run in the Kyiv region. After three months of painstaking work, KEVRZ specialists managed to repair and modernise them.
