An art train is running on the ‘blue’ line of the Kyiv Metro. It is dedicated to Ukrainian avant-garde artist Kazimir Malevich. This was reported by the Metro on Facebook.
The art train will run on the metro for two months. It will be available on the blue line from 27 August until the end of October. We are convinced that such initiatives are particularly valuable: they make travelling on the metro an informative and quick experience.
The project was created thanks to the cooperation of the Kyiv Metro, FILM.UA Distribution, and the team behind the film Malevich. The premiere will take place on 11 September in all cinemas across the country.
The Paint Hunters team of artists turned an ordinary carriage into a mini-gallery of Malevich’s paintings. The exterior of the carriage is decorated with the artist’s recognisable black square and bright geometric shapes. Inside, there are informational posters that introduce passengers to the artist’s life and work, including his time in Kyiv.

Thus, passengers of the Kyiv metro will be able to learn:
- where exactly in Kyiv the artist was born;
- that he studied at the Kyiv Art School of Mykola Murashko;
- how he taught at the Kyiv Art Institute (now the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture).
The project organisers explained the essence of the initiative. They said that Kazimir Malevich is one of the most famous Kyiv residents who had a significant impact on world art. His roots are in Kyiv. The materials for decorating the train were prepared by Tetyana Filevska, creative producer of the film Malevich, who is researching the artist’s life in Kyiv.
The film Malevich — what is known
The film Malevich tells about key events in the artist’s life, giving citizens an idea of the era and passions that surrounded his work: the envy of competitors, great love, pain for the peasants during the Holodomor, and resistance to the Bolshevik regime.
The leading roles were played by actors from the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre: Vitaliy Azhnov, Khristina Korchynska, Marina Koshkina, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Nataliya Vasko and others.
As a reminder, Russian troops attacked a passenger train. The Intercity train on the Kyiv-Kharkiv route was supposed to depart.
