At the request of the relevant departments of the Kyiv City State Administration and the trade unions of the city’s transport companies, the Departments of Economy and Transport were tasked with preparing detailed calculations regarding a possible review of public transport fares in the capital.
Currently, the cost of travel in Kyiv is reportedly the lowest among all cities in Ukraine and has not been revised since 2018. However, the constant rise in prices for fuel, electricity, consumables and logistics is forcing the city authorities to bring the cost of travel closer to an economically justified level. This was announced by the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, on his Telegram channel.
At the same time, in order to implement measures to strengthen the city’s energy resilience, the Kyiv City Council will be forced to review the capital’s budget allocation. It is worth noting that the capital’s transport system is subsidised. For example, 12 billion hryvnias have been allocated for the current year. At the same time, the state has long failed to fulfil its obligations to compensate the city for the costs of free travel for eligible passenger categories. Every year, these costs, amounting to hundreds of millions of hryvnias, are covered by the capital’s budget.
Reducing the significant level of transport subsidies will provide an opportunity to allocate part of the savings, in particular, to preparations for the upcoming heating season.
It was previously reported that an additional train will run from Kyiv to Dnipro.
